February 26, 201511 yr I was just given a Cisco Catalyst 2950/ 24 port switch. The first 22 ports say 10/100 and the last 2 say 10/100/1000. The guy who gave it to me says you can buy a GLC-SX- MM thing a maguey and make the entire switch 10/100/1000. I this true and if so where to I go to find out more. Cisco has basic info but dent mention if it just does 1 port or all ports. I only have basic networking knowledge. Most of my network is 10/100/1000 when possible. Things like apple tv are 10/100. My other 3 switches are 10/100/100. In real world use will this switch do ok or should I just upgrade to switch with more ports. My 8 is full.
February 28, 201511 yr Unless you want to learn Cisco IOS, those old 2950s are pretty much scrap. They're noisy, they drink power, and they're slow. Not terribly reliable, either. I had a few at work, and they even sucked running printers. They're 90's technology that should be left in the 90s.
