Field Level Help in GUI

Featured Replies

I think it would be nice if there was a standard way of supplying field level Help about individual fields in the GUI.  I often want some information about a particular field and do not want to look through more extensive help to find the nugget of information that interests me.  I was thinking about the approach that many web sites take where there is a "?' type symbol following a field that can be clicked on to bring up Help about that field.  An alternative would be to provide the help via a tooltip when hovering over the field although that may be less flexible as not all browsers support tooltips.  This would be a more granular approach than the current Help button although it would probably leverage the same underlying text.

If it could be done using some sort of standard Limetech supported mechanism that the integrated plugins used then I think it is likely that third party plugin authors would also adopt it.  It would also make the GUI much friendlier to new users, or even experienced users who are about to use a feature they do not regularly use.

Have you seen how we do this now with the help button in the webgui?

Yes - but I wanted something that applied just to the particular field that I was interested in rather than all fields on the screen.  Perhaps the approach used by the Help button but just applied to the single field.

Also I find that for some reason it is not that intuitive to click on the Help button when I want information about a field.  A visible indication the GUI that a particular field has associated Help text would make the Help about that field easier to 'discover'

I know what you're talking about and that actually would be pretty nice. Challenge is that it would mean rewriting code on every page in the webgui to do this. Not going to happen before we release 6.0, but definitely something we could look into for a later release.

I must admit I was not thinking about something like this making the 6.0 release at this late a stage in the development cycle.  However I am glad that you think the idea has some merit and could be considered for inclusion in the future.
