Really Need Suggestion for my new build on D-316M Case

Featured Replies

Hi All,

As i am using my old budget AMD unraid system for almost 4 years, now I decided to create a new system to use longer years. I am reading forums almost everyday and i am very confused now. Also i have to say that i am a regular user so mostly i do not understand anything when it goes to any code.

For a long time after reading in forums i decided to have a Xeon but it is really hard for me to find either xeon cpu or a supermicro mainboard from my country. Also it is very expensive if i plan to buy in Germany when i go there and there won't be any warranty for me. Meanwhile one of my friends made me favor and get me D-316 Limetech case from USA with him which is excellent size and structure for me.

My purpose: At the moment i will stream movies directly to XBMC and 4K H265 in near future. I will not use a transcoding but i might have try to stream 2 xbmcs in the future and maybe some of the new plugins which i didnt check the version 6 yet.

So in the end i don't want to buy the cheapest atom and i can not find/afford a good xeon system as well. So i want to purchase a system with i3 and a good pci sata card. Please support me from the manufacturers which i can find.

What i have:

Limetech D-316M case

7x2tb WD green

3x6tb WD red

What i decided to buy:

4x 500gb SSD (for catch but not in near future)

Seasonic SS-650KM3 X650 80 Plus Gold ( please check if it is ok for 10x6tb wd red and 4x500gb ssd and i3)

I really need suggestions for:

Mainboard: Micro-Atx mainboard with at least 6 sataIII. I can easily buy from this manufacturers please try to suggest from those because it is very hard for me to find others in my country. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Asrock

Sata Card: a good sataIII card which has a good performance/price. (with this 2xmini cable outputs :))

CPU: i3 cpu model

Ram: suitable for the system

Sorry for the long post. Thank you very much. Will wait for help.

Hi -

I recently build a new machine with an Asus Z87I-Deluxe, I'm happy with it.  It's ITX but you don't necessarily need more for a server.  I'd recommend searching on NewEgg for motherboard options - while you may not buy from NewEgg the search facility is pretty good and should help you narrow things down.  The brands you listed are all good - just pick one with the features you want which is available where you are.  You might want to post here your selection "I plan to build a system with motherboard XYZ, what do you think?"

For SATA cards some of the popular ones are IBM M1015 or M1115, SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (Sata II), AOC-SAS2LP-MV8, and Dell PERC H310.  The IBM and Dell cards get pulled from servers and sold on eBay and need to be flashed, but can be a good deal.  Be patient and track prices if you want a good deal on eBay or similar where you are.

If you aren't going to transcode any i3 will do (so will a current Pentium).  The low power ones don't help any - they all have similar idle power consumption numbers.  If you anticipate any transcoding I'd go high end on the i3 (4360 or higher) or an i5.

For RAM I'd go with a brand on the compatibility list for your motherboard.  I tend to buy Crucial, G.skill, or Corsair.

Another useful tool is the System Designer page at PCPartPicker.com ( http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ ).

You can start with the CPU of your choice, and once that is added all subsequent options will be compatible with the hardware you've already chosen.  It also has some useful filtering such as the minimum number of SATA ports on a motherboards, etc.

Given the limited availability of hardware where you live, that may be a quicker way for you to settle on a system design.  Then compare a short list of each item against what your vendor can supply.

I can give you one datapoint for CPU. I have an i3 3220 (3.3GHz) and it's used for transcoding all the time. Works great. You'd probably be better off going with a Haswell i3 now, but based on my experience you don't need the high end i3. The 4160 (3.6GHz) seems to be a good sweet spot right now here in the USA - it's on sale on Newegg for $119.

I have an Asrock MB that's no longer in production, so I can't really recommend that. I recently picked up a SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 on eBay for about $50 and it's been great, so I'd look for that.

I have 8GB of RAM in my system.

Question for you about the D-316: Could the case be used vertically if you pulled the ears and handles off? How would it look?

Thank you @shooga @Chugiak @tdallen

After thinking alot i have decided to go on with budget model as my main usage will be streaming to 1 xbmc (HEVC 4K in near future) and no transcoding at the moment. So I will buy the parts which will not change high-end and i want to buy parts which i might change in the future cheaper depending on how i will use unraid 6. Which means i will pay PSU & SAS card good money but i will buy ram-cpu-mainboard average.

Please advice me if below config seems ok.

What i have

Limetechnology D-316m Server Case

My Disk config will be

10 x 6gb WD red and 4 x SSD which is not decided

Please advice. Any idea is precious for me.

Looks like a good build to me.  I'm still not sure why you are going with 4 large SSDs, though.

The Pentium will be good for any basic file serving duties.  8GB of RAM will work for unRAID plus a number of plugins/dockers.  ASRock is well liked here, and that appears to be a good PSU.

The only thing I'd mention is ECC RAM.  It gets a little more expensive - you need a processor and motherboard that support ECC as well as the RAM.  I think that everyone building a new always-on server should think about ECC, though.  Many people will consider it and just go with a regular setup - but I think you should evaluate it during pre-planning.
