how do i run auto-backup to a usb-attached drive?

Featured Replies

I want a setup that will allow me to access all my media if the Server falls over at any point, without having to find time to get it working in order to watch stuff.

I have a 2x2tb system @ 2tb total storage. I also have a 2tb usb drive that I want to attach to the server on a permanent basis and have the new deletions and additions replicated to it.

Is there a simple way to set this up as an automated overnight backup ?

This can be done but it takes just a bit of linux foo to set up.

First you have to mount the usb-attached drive. I am not sure how to do this. I've heard people suggest SNAP or other plugins, but I don't know anything about them, so I can't help you with this.

Once you are able to mount your USB attached drive what you want to do is create a script file which contains an rsync command to replicate your array. How exactly you want to do this is dependent on your set up. You can find a good starting point here and here. The major difference is that instead of backing up the cache you will be backing up individual disks or user shares, and your destination location will be your usb drive not the array.

With this small a system, I would get a 4Tb or larger external drive and Raspberry Pi.  Instal the BTSync plugin on your unRaid server and on the pi.  Also set the pi up so the the drive is externally accessible..  This also has the advantage that you could have  another system remotely.
