unRAID / HTPC build questions

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking for some feedback, advice about sever/NAS build.

Some items on this parts list may seem a bit much for a sever, but I originally had planned to upgrade my HTPC as I was running out of HDD space. It currently has about 18tb of data (mostly media).

The HTPC is set-up as JBOD, but with no back-up or raid set-up. So after doing some research I decided to change from upgrading the HTPC to building a sever/NAS, using unRAID.

So looking to see if parts I have already purchased would be suitable for the sever build.

Planned use - At first it would be to stream 1080p media files to a number of clients, via a wired set-up. Also after reading both the unRAID site and this forum. I would be looking to start using some App and also setting up some VMs, after using unRAID os for a bit.

I plan to use the 8TB seagate HDD for the parity drive and adding HDDs I already own to the array too, but over time when the needs arises to replace/increase the HDD size.

Thanks for looking over this post, any feedback, points and suggestion will be welcome.

There has been limited (or no) success getting VMs to use iGPU, so you will need a video card to get passthrough to a VM if you are also thinking of using this as htpc also. I am not trying to do this, but you might browse the Virtual Machines - KVM subforum for some ideas if you are interested in this capability.

Thanks for the info, I will check-out that subforum.

Maybe I should have left out HTPC from the subject, as I don't plan to use this set-up as a HTPC. The only reason I had that in the line, was because the parts were brought with that type of set-up in mind in the first place and I wanted to see if they could be incorporated into the NAS/sever build.

thanks again

Your selection for case does not appear to have drive bays accessible from the front.  You might want to consider a case that has hot swap bays.  The compelling feature of these is that you don't have to mess with cabling any time you replace a drive.  This rackmount for example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RM-424-Gen-II-Chassis-/dp/B00S16Y1UK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1431041269&sr=8-5&keywords=x-case+rackmount

Norco brand cases are readily available in the US.  You might see if there's a good source in the UK, for a model such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033
