Order of /Dev naming

I just added another disk to my system, and had rearranged some sata ports.  I noticed that several of the disks had their names rearranged.  What was /dev/sdc became /dev/sde, and some other similar shifts occurred.  Everything is operating correctly, but I thought the device name was permanently assigned to a disk when it was inserted into the array.  Evidently not.  How are the names specified?  And it implies that I could rearrange the drives any way I want?  Is there doc somewhere in the wiki?  Did a search on disk name but didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance...

Linux assigns the drives as they're enumerated ... this can even change on different boots, although normally with the same set of disks on the same set of ports they'll be fairly consistent.

But it doesn't matter -- UnRAID tracks them by the drive serial numbers assigned to your disk slots ... not by the Linux identifier.

... and yes, you can rearrange them any way you want  :)
