Doing upgrade on my server. Need feedback on parts.

Featured Replies

Looking to do a refresh on my old unraid box. I have a separate plex box so with this upgrade im looking to add plex to the unraid server. I would like at least 10 sata ports. Can I get some feedback on this parts list?  http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8ZYg4D

thats more ram than you need for simple Plex and some misc dockers. If you're planning on a windows VM that will be gaming then that 'll suffice.

Thanks. I'll get just 8GB save a few $.

One thing to consider:  With boards that use unbuffered RAM (most desktop boards) it's much better to only install 2 modules instead of 4 ... the bus loading is much lower and the resulting signaling waveforms for the data and address signals are far "cleaner" (and thus more reliable).

So ... if you think there's any chance you'll want to use a VM, or just want a bit of extra "headroom", it's much better to use 2 8GB modules than to buy 2 4GB modules and later add additional modules.

i.e. I'd go ahead and buy the pair of 8GB modules you listed in your parts list  :)

I suppose ill need a SSD also as a cache drive. Currently no cache drive installed.

The cache doesn't have to be an SSD, but clearly an SSD is a nicer "apps" drive, since it's so much faster.
