do I need GPU passthru to run PLEX?

Featured Replies

I have a friend getting ready to build a new unRAID box, and they are a PLEX user.  They don't have a motherboard or CPU that are vt-x capable, and want to know if they need to upgrade hardware to be able to watch/use PLEX without passing thru a GPU.

I'm not sure, since I do use passthru, so I figured I'd ask what is possible.

Suggestions/ideas/thoughts?

Plex server can run on a headless system, and you can watch movies using its web interface.

okay, it seems most dockers i community applications called plex are actually plex server, including the binhex version I installed.  it seems like i could watch content with it, but whenever I actually play anything, i just get corrupted garbage/static on my laptop screen.  I assume this is because I'm on a wifi connection.

However, it seems like you're saying it should work to play content on connected computers (I assume with a solid/wired connection).

Does plex use the video card in the server to do what it does, or is it all CPU doing the decoding and rendering duties?

Just trying to understand to help her make a good decision on parts purchase.

Plex just streams the file to the client (assuming the client is capable of natively displaying the source file), which requires almost zero CPU power. If the client can't display the source file natively, Plex will transcode it on-the-fly to a format the client can display, this does require decent CPU power. A good rule of thumb is roughly 2000 passmark score for each transcoded HD stream. In other words to run two simultaneous transcoded HD streams would require a CPU with roughly 4000 passmark score.  Plex server does not require, nor can it make use of a GPU.  it is the Plex client that requires a GPU to render the video.
