First unRaid Build

Featured Replies

Hi,  I have ordered a HP Gen8 Microserver to build an unRaid server.  As well as hosting all of my media it will also be used as a Plex Media Server.  While I'm waiting for it to arrive i'm trying to get organised, clearing a space for it plus sorting in my head how to connect it to the network.

My current set up is:

Bt Home Hub 5(router) ----cat6----unmanaged gig switch (Main PC) ---cat6---Unmanaged gig switch (TV, Roku, xbox)

The upstairs of my house is connected via homeplugs directly connected to the router, it's not feasible at the moment to lift floorboards and get some cabling upstairs..

Anyway my question is where to connect the server? The easiest option for me is to connect the server to the switch my main pc is connected to but would it be better to run another cable direct from the router to the server?  The media will be streamed to the Roku plus upstairs and I should mention the switches are nothing fancy, just £20 TP Link ones.

Hope I've made sense!

Thanks in advance,

Mike

By homeplugs I assume you mean powerline adapters.

Not clear though what exactly the upstairs has to do with any of the listed equipment. Is some of it upstairs and some of it downstairs? Maybe a diagram would clear it up.

Ok I have knocked up a quick image which hopefully explains a bit better. I mentioned upstairs purely because media will be streamed there through Plex using the new server. Thanks

router or unmanaged switch, it really doesnt make a material difference.

I would connect to the unmanaged gig switch... it is where most of your streaming devices are connected, therefor the shortest path..

What is the router? Does it have gigabit ports?

Yes that's the router i've got. Well judging from your comments I'll connect it to the switch my PC uses, it's certainly the easiest just wanted to check performance wise it would be the right thing to do.  Thanks for all the responses I'm looking forward to getting started!
