Do I need a PSU with two separate Molex Chains?

Featured Replies

I would appreciate if I could get some help concerning my upgrade as I don't have much knowledge in electricity and it is my first time building a higher capacity NAS, I currently only have about 6 drives but I'm planning on revamping my NAS to allow for a possibility of 15 drives.

My current plans for powering and connecting my hard drives are as follows

3X SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B

3X Molex splitters to power the trays

1X EVGA G2 550W PSU

My only concern is that this PSU only comes with one chain of 3 Molex connectors and I'm wondering if its ok to just plug each splitter to one or would it be rather safer to choose another PSU with two chains or simply converting an existing sata power chain with this:

SATA to Molex

Thanks!

You'll be fine with that configuration.    The power supply has a single 12v rail, so there's no issue with distributing the load between rails;  and the molex "chain" almost certainly uses a sufficient gauge wire to handle the inrush current for 15 drives ... which would typically be about 18 amps for modern drives.  [You can generally figure 1.2 amp/drive on the 12v and .6amp/drive on the 5 volt line for spinup current -- which is by far the highest power draw from the drives]

Thanks Gary! great to hear I was dreading the idea of getting another one as I'm quite fond of that unit.
