sgibbers17
I have been trying to update to windows 10 but it keep failing. I have updated my VirtIO ISO, changed my CPU cores down to 1, and changed to an emulated CPU. Is there anything else I van try? I don't want to do a clean insall because my TV tuner software is a real pain to setup. Quote Link to comment

garycase
... I don't want to do a clean insall because my TV tuner software is a real pain to setup. Understand ... HOWEVER, that may in fact be what's causing the issue. One way to confirm that is to save a copy of your VM (effectively an "image" of the OS) -- shut down the VM, then just copy the virtual disk to a safe location -- and then do the upgrade again, this time keeping "nothing" (i.e. a clean install). If that works okay, it's likely that your TV tuner software isn't '10 compatible ... so you may want to just use '10 for other purposes and still run your TV tuner software under 8.1 Quote Link to comment

garycase
Ahh ... then clearly that's not the issue, since you KNOW it works okay with Windows 10. On the other hand, I suppose the question at this point might be which is more of a "pain" -- setting up the TV software or trying to isolate why the system won't update. Might actually be less of a hassle to just do a clean install and re-install the TV software. Quote Link to comment
bungee91
I don't see anything out of the ordinary unfortunately. You could try previous virtio drivers, but I am uncertain the release #. I'm pretty sure that when I updated my 2 VM's from 8.1 to 10, that 1.110 wasn't the version I was using. I'm not saying this is specifically your issue (as likely many have upgraded with 1.110), but you could try with another version. Making a copy of the image and doing some trial/error will likely be required. I would start with trying other versions of virtio, and a clean install is certainly an option (this is all for testing purposes). Mine were both with i440fx and 1 CPU without issue. I did only have 4GB of ram assigned, but not sure that should matter much. Quote Link to comment
sgibbers17
I believe that the stable virtIO drivers are not compatible with windows 10 as noted in jon's windows 10 YouTube video v1.102 is what was stable at the time of the video. I first used v1.096 until I watched the video and updated to v1.110. Is there a certain way to update the drives? I may have updated them incorrectly. Quote Link to comment

Update the driver (or downgrade) in the following 4 areas (see pic). You can let Windows do it if you're upgrading, likely have to force it and select it yourself if downgrading. You can either mount the ISO in your XML, or just mount the ISO from Windows and point it to it. Quote Link to comment
sgibbers17
I have tried uninstalling all my programs one at a time, uninstalling the virtIO drivers and reinstalling them, and keep nothing during the windows 10 update. All of which give me a "system_thread_exception_not_handled" BSOD during first reboot of the windows 10 update and then gives me the We couldn't install windows 10 then boots back to windows 8.1. dirtysanchez
It's most likely a driver issue. The setuperr.log file may or may not help pinpoint the issue, post the contents of it. It should be located at C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther. Quote Link to comment

sgibbers17
With the help of Jencryzthers showing me what exactly needed to be changed in my windows.xml file I have started updating my windows 8.1 to windows 10. The changes that needed to be made were: <acpi/> or what ever you may have in this section. was changed to <acpi> <kvm> <hidden state='on'/> </kvm> </acpi> And <cpu> <topology sockets='1' cores='1' threads='1'/> </cpu> was changed to <cpu mode='custom' match='exact'> <model fallback='allow'>core2duo</model> <feature policy='require' name='nx'/> </cpu> Jon can you add this to the windows 10 on unraid 6 blog and wiki? http://lime-technology.com/windows-10-on-unraid-6/ Quote Link to comment
