Data loss???

Featured Replies

I have a question regarding data protection.  I had a v5 unraid server with 1P, 5D drives with 9TB total storage, ran perfect for the last 5+ years.  Recently decided to upgrade to v6.1.3.  My storage requirements have also changed and no longer need the 9TB.

So, I rebuilt and currently I'm running a single 2TB parity and a single 2TB data drive running v6.1.3.  Since the drives are 5+ years old, I don't expect them to last too much longer.

Question: With just the 2 drives, can either one be rebuilt from the other?  Can the single parity rebuild the single data drive and vice versa?  If not, why?  What can I do to ensure I'm protected?  TIA.

Yes. The parity protected array can be fully rebuilt on a single drive failure.

But even so, don't overlook the importance of backups. The only thing that counts as a backup of a file is an extra copy of the file somewhere.

I do have other copies, i just wanted to make sure I can rebuild the single data drive if/when it fails.  If I understand correctly, unraid can recover any single drive failure, regardless of the total number of drives making up the server, providing the parity is correct.
