November 16, 201510 yr Hello, I'm currently trialing unRAID (1 Parity/1 Disk) I wanted to try the emulation feature, so I powered down and unplugged the Disk. I started the array with emulation - seems to work fine. I powered down and reconnected the Disk, I thought unRAID would just carry on as normal now the disk was back, but it had to rebuild the Disk, even though nothing had changed and the Data was intact - is this intended? Also a quick question - during emulation could the shares be copied/written to if needed (if waiting for replacement) - what performance affect would this have? Thanks
November 17, 201510 yr Yes, rebuilding is normal => once the disk is missing, any replacement will be rebuilt. And yes, you can read, write, move, etc. the data on the emulated disk and it will all work fine. When an actual disk is rebuilt, it will match what it should have as a result of those operations. Performance, however, will be degraded, since all of the disks have to be read in order to emulate the missing disk.
