September 30, 200916 yr I'd like to set up an off site "backup" unRaid box. Is there any software that could run and do this in the background? I have a vpn setup to my remote location so if i added the unraid box to the remote location i could see it but i dont want to manually copy the files over each time something is changed. Thanks
September 30, 200916 yr Look into how rsync works. The first time you run it it will synchronize everything. After that it will only synchronize changed files. rsync comes with unRAID so it's fairly easy to use and you can set it to work on a disk by disk basis. I use rsync as a backup solution myself. Pulling directories from multiple servers onto my unraid host. There is also a program called unison that can mirror directories. I'm not familiar with that one.
September 30, 200916 yr See the CrashPlan Thread to get you started. It will allow you to backup to a server that you own for free. It is probably one of the easiest solutions but you will have to mess with a few things so that you can point the GUI to the correct place. Once it is set up though it is pretty much seemless. I backup my laptop, my parents desktop, and my sisters laptop to my unRAID server. From there the unRAID box backs up to the CrashPlan cloud.
September 30, 200916 yr Author @WeeboTech Rsync, and unison seem to be what i'm looking for. Not much doc on how to get rsync running on unraid. I really like the idea of using ssh that will keep me from having to maintain a vpn running. Now if anyone has a walk through on how to get this running.... ?
September 30, 200916 yr There are plenty of threads on it. Do some searches. I have examples of config files and scripts to set up rsync in inetd.conf
September 30, 200916 yr And when you find helpful rsync threads, please list them here or add them yourself to the UnRAID Topical Index, rsync topic. It only has 2 links now, is barely started. One of those does point to WeeboTech's work though, mentioned above. Edit: just added another important thread
