Drive disabled contents emulated. Smart says drive is fine.

Featured Replies

Hi.

I upgraded to 6.1.7 and restarted my server only to get the dreaded red cross next to one of my drives.  Everything was fine before the upgrade.

I looked at the diagnostics file to check the smart report and it says my drive is fine.  Not sure what to do now.

The drive in question is 3TB - sdk - ST3000DM001-9YN166

Any help would be appreciated.

I have attached the diagnostics file.

The Red 'x' does not necessarily mean that the drive failed - just that a write to it failed.

I would suggest that you check the cabling, and if that all looks OK then rebuild the drive onto itself to clear the 'x'.  The procedure for this is:

  • Stop the array
  • Unassign the problem disk
  • Start the array (it will warn you that if you do so it is unprotected).  When the array starts the disk should now show as 'missing'.  The purpose of this step is to get unRAID to 'forget' the serial number of that drive.
  • Stop the array
  • Assign the drive again
  • Start the array which will start the rebuild of the drive.

Hopefully this will all complete without error and the 'x' will be gone.  If it does not complete without error then the details of how it fails is likely to provide guidance on whether the drive needs replacing or not.

I agree with itimpi that you should try a rebuild first, but that disk has a SMART error that usually means a higher probability of failure, keep an eye on it, and if it redballs again replace it.
