olaflemme
Hi, Long time unRAID user, I'm currently having problems with my parity disk. A few days ago, I noticed my array was offline. After starting it manually, I saw the parity disk was orange (invalid data content), and a parity-sync started automatically. After 24h+ of syncing, the parity disk got red (disabled). So I ran a SMART test and got "Completed: read failure". Here is the full SMART report smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 Serial Number: WD-WMC1T1955212 Firmware Version: 80.00A80 User Capacity: 3,000,592,982,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 9 ATA Standard is: Exact ATA specification draft version not indicated Local Time is: Thu Feb 4 15:56:12 2016 CET SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. If not, how to get it to work again ? And if it's not dead, is it safe to continue using it as a parity drive ? Or as a data drive in unRAID ? Thanks to anyone who can help me with this ! PS : using unRAID 5.0-rc11 (yes... I know... planning to upgrade to last version) Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Although there are no pending sectors, a read failure during a SMART test usually indicates a bad disk, I would replace it. Quote Link to comment
SSD
Seem to remember that having a disk spin down in the middle of the test can cause these types of issues. The os does not see the drive activity and will spin it down. Might disable spindown on the drive and retry. I don't see anything in the smart attributes that looks concerning. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
I believe the test would hang with a spindown, also it would not cause short test error: # 2 Short offline Completed: read failure 50% 2564 1564248776 Quote Link to comment
olaflemme
Thanks, I'm trying another complete SMART test with spin down disabled, but I'm not really optimistic since parity-sync fails anyway. Seems like WD Red are not as durable as I thought, failing 2 weeks after the end of the 3-year warranty... If I need to replace it, I think I'll buy a cheaper one. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Yeah, it sucks, just had three 3TB Greens fail in the last 2 weeks, all with perfect SMART, all but one out of warranty by a few weeks. Quote Link to comment
olaflemme
Hi, I tried another SMART test with spin down disabled, and the result is the same. I get "Last SMART test result: Errors occurred - Check logs", and the log is almost identical : smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 Serial Number: WD-WMC1T1955212 Firmware Version: 80.00A80 User Capacity: 3,000,592,982,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 9 ATA Standard is: Exact ATA specification draft version not indicated Local Time is: Fri Feb 5 22:23:05 2016 CET SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. olaflemme
Wow, I guess I'm luckier than I thought, I was sure I bought the disk in jan. 2013 but I checked and it's still in warranty until 02/13/2016, so I asked for RMA. ^^ Thanks for the help! Quote Link to comment

You very well may have bought the disk in Jan '13 => the warranty expiration dates are generally set at the warranty length (3 yrs in this case) plus an estimated time in the distribution chain (typically 60 days). In any event, you're a whole week early Quote Link to comment
