February 24, 201610 yr I am new to unRAID and am starting to see some info regarding preclearing disks. Can someone shed some more light on the topic for me and maybe share a link they may have?
February 24, 201610 yr http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0 The gist is that when you get a new hard drive you run through its paces to make sure there are no defects or bad sectors that will come bite your rear end once you start putting valuable data. There is a must have plugin that will drive it all within the web GUI. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=39985.0 Also helps if you have the Unassinged Drives plugins installed and you can monitor the pre-clear process from the Main page on the web GUI. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=45807.0 Highly recommend you use them all.
February 24, 201610 yr In addition to its often used testing function, preclear has another and even more primary purpose. When you add a disk to a new slot in a parity protected array, it must be clear (all zeros) so parity will remain valid. If you don't preclear the disk then unRAID will take your array offline (possibly for very many hours depending on size) while it clears the disk.
