SMART Scan After PreClear cycles in Unraid 6 or no?

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm super new to Unraid.  I just build my server and after reading the posts in the forum about it, decided to stock it with the Seagate ST8000AS0002 8 tb drives.

I pre-cleared them with 3 cycles and it they all passed.  My question is - do I start using them right away or is it heavily recommended to run an extended SMART scan?

I have seen many posts where everyone recommends the 3 pre clear cycles, but relatively few mention whether or not it is just as important to run the extended SMART scan during the pre clear process.  I have read that SMART checking is built in to Unraid 6 - would that make it redundant to run an extended SMART scan?

Like I said I'm new and learning as I go so I apologize if this is a simpleton's question.

Part of the Preclear script involves taking pre and post preclear smart reports. I don't think those are extended smart reports, but I don't think an extended smart report is really needed at this point in time assuming nothing popped up as being a problem between the start of your 3 preclear cycles and the end of your 3 preclear cycles.

IMO 3 cycles without any SMART issues popping up seems like a pretty sufficient test to me.

Agree, if both pending and reallocated sectors stayed at 0 I also think an extended test is unnecessary.
