PCIe Passthru: Reporting incorrect video card model!

Featured Replies

I have two graphic cards hooked up to this system ATI 5450 and ATI 7950.    unRAID reports them as ATI 5430 and ATI 6800 respectively.

The 5340 is the main video card for unRAID and the 7950 is used for a Windows 10 VM.  As you can see below it is incorrectly reporting the card (02:00:00).  Windows also sees it as a 6800.  This is a bad thing as a 6800 doesn't support some technologies like Directx12 like a 7950 does.  Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I just swapped the pcie slot the 7950 is plugged in and still getting same results.  Really at a lose at how this cards model could be reported incorrectly.

I don't think you should worry about the name at all. Not all graphic cards are shown by it's correct model name in Linux. Try passing it through to a VM and it will be recognized correctly.

I have already passed it to a Windows 10 VM and it still sees it as a 6800.  A 6800 has limits its capabilities for things like Directx12 compared to the 7950.  But it being more of a linux issue does point me in a direction.  I was at a complete lose as to where this issue could be originating from.

I am still trying to troubleshoot this issue and I am out of luck.  I was thinking of booting a WinPE thumbdrive off the system to see if windows reports the correct model.

My worry is if that is a good idea, will booting off of WinPE thumbdrive somehow mess with my raid disks?  Could windows somehow try to use them and mess something up?  Or am I being stupid?

I had an ati r370 which got recognised as a r270. But that is because they are basically a rebadged 270 or 275 i think. However in windows vm reported correctly.

I dont know if it would help but you could try passing the rom file through and see if that helps.

Running pe shouldnt effect your disks, but just to be sure why not just unplug the sata cables whilst you run the pe?

Rom file?  I am not entirely sure what that is.  Yeah passing this to windows 10 doesnt seem to correct the reporting.

Well I did as you mentioned and same results.  I found a couple roms that fit the description but still same results.  Also it seem like that documentation might be out of date?  I was using SeaBIOS and the configuration file didnt appear like that, it looks like the OVMF based.  So I created a new VM with each to see if that would help and still no go.

Which version are you running? 6.1.9 or 6.2 beta?

If you are running 6.2 there might be differences in the xml. I guess the configuration file you mention is the xml file for the vm?

6.2 Beta and correct, the XML is what I am referring too.

In 6.2 beta you have to add the rom file like below and place it between <hostdev> and </hostdev> somewhere.

<rom bar='on' file='/etc/fake/boot.bin'/>
