April 21, 201610 yr Hello. I'm thinking about replacing my 5 year old Windows server with a unRAID build. I want to build it in a Fractal Design Node 304 it has room for 6 drives, which should be enough for me. I'm thinking of using 1 parity 5 disks and then find room for a little ssd for apps and dockers It's mainly going to be used as file server, plex server, teamspeak server and torrent client. I will also be running some virtual linux and windows machines on it. The hardware will be as following ASRock H110M-ITX i5 6600T 16Gb RAM Noctua NH-L9i for better cooling and silent operation. The problem is, that i can only find mitx motherboards with 4 SATA ports, so I have been looking for a way to add more SATA ports. I found a affordable HP Smart array P410 controller on ebay, but i read on the forum, that it might not be supported. http://www.ebay.de/itm/141788191769?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Can anyone point me towards a controller that is 100% supported, and that adds atleast 4 more SATA ports to this build? And is there anything else i should take into consideration with this build?
April 21, 201610 yr Hi - For SATA controllers, some options are: Adaptec 1430sa (4 port) Supermicro AOC-SASLP Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP IBM M1015 and M1115 (flashed to IT mode) Dell PERC H310 and H200 (flashed to IT mode) Most of those are 8 ports, which I know you don't need. There just seem to be more good options with 8 ports. Also, take a look in the Storage Devices and Controllers forum at the sticky posts and links to the Wiki. Regarding the rest of your build, you'll need a good power supply with a single 12v rail - and SFX power supplies usually work best in SFF cases. For the CPU, I'm not a fan of using the T chips unless you have a specific need to minimize heat or noise. In a server you're generally better off with the regular 6600. You mention a Windows VM - do you see a need to pass through hardware into it (GPU, etc)? If so you want to plan carefully since not all motherboards support VT-d and Skylake has some unique issues regarding passing hardware groups.
April 21, 201610 yr Author Those are some pretty expensive sata controllers. I'll take a look in the forum, and see if I can find something a bit cheaper. I have a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 700W PSU, which fits in the case, that I'm going to use. It should be powerful enough. The CPU is chosen because the server is going to be in my living room, so it has to be as quiet as possible. I don't think I'll need to pass through hardware but I'll keep that in mind. The servers i have in mind are going to be headless. Thanks for the feedback.
April 21, 201610 yr Perhaps this is more in line with your budget. http://www.amazon.de/IO-Crest-Controller-Non-Raid-SI-PEX40064/dp/B00AZ9T3OU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461244057&sr=8-1&keywords=iocrest+sata+controller
April 21, 201610 yr Those are some pretty expensive sata controllers. Sorry I didn't mention originally, but I'd recommend eBay for all those. The Dell's can be had for less than $60 if you shop around. The SASLP can be quite reasonable as well but the others get closer to $100. The Adaptecs are around $20.
