br0 vs eth0

Featured Replies

When i check ifconfig i wonder why my ip is showing up under br0 instead of eth0? It caused me alot of headache setting up the OpenVPN docker, as the default interface was eth0. What's the difference between those two, and how do i change it to eth0 (if that's the default)?

I have just a single Network Card (Onboard on my GIGABYTE GA-Z170M-D3H motherboard). And a DD-WRT router with auto DHCP.

Because you have bridging enabled. It allows Dockers and VMs to share the eth0 port but to have their own IP addresses too.

I see. So it's something that gets enabled when adding VM's? (I have a Windows 10 VM).

So i guess this is a contraint when using VM's + Dockers? I wouldn't be able to change it back to eth0 and still having my VM's + Dockers?

What you see depends on which way you look. From inside a Docker looking out, you will see a single eth0 which can request an IP address from your DHCP server. VMs can do the same, or if you have multiple NICs and hardware support, you can pass through a physical Ethernet port. unRAID obviously needs a NIC and a separate IP address too, hence the need for the bridge.
