Yeah, it depends on your goals.  If you want to do what you're doing today, only better and faster - the G3258 with 8GB is a better platform than your old Core2 setup - 4x more memory, 2x faster processor, and get rid of your unRAID 6 stability problems.  If you want to upgrade for the future, though, then it will cost more  :(.

what would you recommend for virtulaztion setup?

What level virtualization would you like to get into?  I see three levels at the moment:

- Dockers

- Lightweight VMs accessed via Remote Desktop

- Heavier weight VMs that use hardware pass-through - i.e. the combination NAS/gaming rig

actually ive decided ive got more than enough spare machines laying around the house to do whatever i need. Going to just do the basic upgrades and use the machine solely as a file server.
