December 13, 200916 yr I just finished building my first unRAID server and wanted to setup 2 drives with hardware (motherboard) RAID1 (mirrored). I plan on using this RAID1 drive to store important files and figured this would give an additional level of protection. I setup my motherboard for RAID1 on 2 drives and 2 other drives with no RAID. When I go to the "Devices" tab on the UI I see all 4 drives listed. Is what I described above possible with unRAID and if so, which of the 2 drives listed on the "Devices" tab should I pick for my data drive? Hardware: Case - Norco 4220 Motherboard - EVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR ( 6 x SATA-2 with support for RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5, JBOD ) Hard Drives - 12 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM (testing with 4 now) SATA Controllers - 2 x Rosewill RC-218 ( Marvell 88SX7042 chipset ) Video - SPARKLE SFPC84GS512U2LP Thanks Christopher

My suggestion is to figure out the serial numbers for the drives and base your selection from that.

Software RAID1 from the BIOS will not work with unRAID the way you want to use it. Only hardware based RAID1 using the Silicon Image 5744 chipset or something similar will work. These work by hiding the fact that RAID1 is done at a hardware level. The only issue with this method is unRAID cannot spin down the drives or grab the temperature.
December 14, 200916 yr Something like this would work. http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/ad2sahpmeu.asp As I noted before. The drives will not spin down. Putting this in an external case and using eSATA allows you to move the drives in an emergency.
