May 7, 201610 yr Hi all, I am a long time user of Unraid 5 and now Unraid 6, hence I am now starting to run out of space on the main box. My dilemma, I have a second Unraid machine with similar spec as the main machine which is running Unraid 5 and I currently backup the main server to, I am thinking I have never needed this backup machine and so maybe I should promote it to the main server and run the main server just for storage of existing data. My main usage for Unraid is as a media streaming box and we often bing watch older shows and so I will still need the current content available, so the above solution will require both machines running. Both machines have 10 4tb drives, (8 storage, 1 cache, 1 parity) , the main machine has an LSI sata card which does have free ports, my main issue is the case does not have any more space, it is an Antec 900 with 2 Supermicro 5 bay drive cages. Heat has started to become an issue due to the room the servers are in get hot with just the heat from the drives being cooled. Are there any external drive bays that will work with Unraid? I have a Mediasonic 4 bay enclosure on my windows PC, would one of those work with Unraid? Would Unraid 6 recognize an add in card and see the drives in that type of enclosure? Thanks for any advice or insight. Patrick
May 8, 201610 yr ... I have never needed this backup machine ... You know, I presume, that Murphy's Law almost guarantees that as soon as you quit backing up your data, you'll have a catastrophic failure I would NOT abandon your backup strategy.
May 8, 201610 yr Author Yes, that is something I have dwelled on. It would also be a larger power hog to have both machines running 24/7 . So that leaves me with an external enclosure option OR swapping out the case. With the Antec 900 it is the front to back that is cramped as I have enough height to put a 3rd drive cage but it currently will not fit due to the atx motherboard blocks it. Also a 3rd cage does introduce overall more heat into the case. I have been looking at Icy Dock external enclosure which has a nice large fan on the front for cool. , but I am still not sure what card would work for external Sata connection?
May 9, 201610 yr If you have a free SATA port you likely don't need any addition card. The Black Vortex has a built-in port multiplier, so it only needs one SATA connection ... which you already have. Not certain your current controller is port-multiplier compliant; but the only way to know for sure is to try it. Worst case is you'd need to buy an inexpensive add-on card.
May 9, 201610 yr Author The main server has a Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 card which does have several free connections, would this work? Otherwise the other server has a IO Crest 4 Port SATA III PCI-e 2.0 which has been working fine with Unraid 5 and so I presume would work fine with Unraid 6 . Neither card has external ports, are you saying that I should get an internal Black Vortex and run power and sata cable from within the server and have the enclosure sitting outside? Or is there a way to hook up the external version? Patrick

Patrick Just buy an eSATA bracket and you can use the external version. http://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9b-12-200-500 [Note: You can also get a single port bracket, but interestingly it costs more than the dual port one Even if you're only going to connect one (for now), I'd get the dual port bracket.
