Parity Drive Location and Temp. - Bottom or Top of Case?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Wondering where you keep you most used drive, i.e. Parity drive? I have a Define R5 case and currently have 2 x 4 TB drives in it, more to come. I'm pre-clearing the second drive and it is running at 32 deg. C, up from 30 deg. idle. The second drive is currently at the top of the case followed my the second drive. Would it be better if the cache drive was at the bottom of the case, as heat rises? Or does it not make a difference? The case has 2 x 140 mm case fans in the front (intake), and 1 x 140 mm fan in the back (exhaust).

Cheers,

Your cooling and airflow sound great!  Always nice to see users taking airflow seriously.  As to the parity drive, all drives need good airflow, not just your most used.  I wouldn't worry about positioning, that usually doesn't matter.  If you determine you have a hotspot *anywhere* in the case, you'd want to avoid it if possible, or fix it.

32* C is a good temp for a drive under load.  I don't have the R5 but it's a great looking case.

In my case I have a drive position that is immediately above a fan but not directly cooled by the fan (i.e. air isn't blowing directly on it).  I have an old drive that runs very hot and by moving it from an indirectly cooled bay to a directly cooled bay I was able drop the temps by 7-8* under load.  Since you're running two fans in the front of the R5 I think all your bays are directly cooled - if not, that's the only thing I'd worry about, top or bottom doesn't have as much impact in my experience.
