Write speed decreased

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just recently installed a new 3TB drive. In achieving this, I had to install plugins, which required me to change my network settings (wasn't connecting to the internet).  I am thinking that the changes I made resulted in the current problems I am having with write speed.

I don't have a cache drive, (and did not before).  However my write speed now is maxed out at 1MB/s. (My read speed is the same, 1 MB/s).

More than this, when I am writing to the Unraid server from my PC, I can't do navigate any directories on my PC at the same time. I have to wait until the move has completed.

Diagnostics file is below.

MY network setting are:

MAC address:

1C:6F:65:55:CE:BD

Enable bonding:

Bonding mode:

Setup bridge:

Bridge name:

br0

Bridge enable STP:

Bridge forward delay:

0

Obtain IP address automatically:

IP address:

192.168.86.119

Network mask:

255.255.255.0

Default gateway:

192.168.86.1

Obtain DNS server address automatically:

DNS server 1:

8.8.8.8

DNS server 2:

8.8.4.4

DNS server 3:

Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

First time I heard network settings need to be changed to install a new drive.  :o

What was changed exactly?

Reading between the lines, the OP most likely needed to install the preclear plugin, but the server was unable to communicate to the outside world so the DNS settings needed to be changed.  The settings did not need to be changed to add a new drive, only to install preclear

Absolutely correct.

Well, the last thing in your syslog shows you replaced disk1. Are you trying to test the write speed while it is rebuilding a disk?

Thanks for the reply.  No the rebuild has finished.

So, I still have the same problem.  What write speeds would you expect with no cache drive.

My network is:

1. Intel PC with i# core, 8GB RAM, decent wireless card, connecting wirelessly to a...

2. Google ON Hub router, sitting 15 foot away, line of sight

3. Connected to the UNRAID server via an wired ethernet connection over a 10 ft cable, through a TPLink Gigabit switch.

Any suggestions very much welcomed.

* You don't have a lot of memory, and it appears that 256MB of it is assigned to a graphics monitor, which unRAID doesn't use.  The next time you reboot, go into the BIOS settings and look for the memory reserved for VGA (not sure what they will call it), and decrease it to the lowest possible.  That should provide a couple of hundred megs more for caching.

* I can see 3 periods where I/O would have been severely impacted - during the Preclear of the new disk, during the rebuild of Disk 1, and during the parity check.  I/O outside of those periods should have been fine.

* Wireless networking is always unreliable, better for some, worse for others.  Why not try the SpeedTest plugin, to see what it says about your speed.

I see no other issues in your diagnostics.

I have no idea why.... but I came home from work today, ready to implement the advice above... went to copy a file.... and I get transfer speeds of 12MB/s.

I am absolutely bowled over.

I made no changes.  (And it has been a week since I rebuilt the new drive). I had been struggling for a week now, with speeds of 1 MB/s and not being able to do anything whilst copying.

So, why would this be ?  Cockroach on the diode ?

I'm not going to pretend to be a network guy, but the one thing about WiFi (as I understand it) is that beyond the fact that your mileage is going to vary due to interference from crowded channels, etc is that (and this is what they don't really tell you) is that the bandwidth is shared between devices.

If you have another device chewing up all of the available wifi bandwidth (fast downloads, etc) your other devices trying to use wifi are going to starve.
