$350 CDN budget for CPU, mobo and RAM

Featured Replies

Guys I use my current unRAID system just for a Windows 10 VM for web browsing, Youtube, no gaming, and the other apps running on unRAID are PLEX, Sab, Sonarr and Couchpotato. My current system has the following crazy parts, 5930k, X99 motherboard and 16GB DDR4, this is too much power for the use. I plan on selling the components listed and replacing them with parts that reduce power consumption and are more suited to a 24/7 usage scenario. Please advise on the best options.

What's your idle power draw now?

The biggest things to consider, besides current power draw are:

1. What are your Plex requirements? Transcoding etc?

2. Are you passing through a GPU to the win 10 VM?

I am not sure on my power draw right now, how can I measure this without a kill-a-watt?

I do have a discreet AMD GPU for VM passthrough.

PLEX is only used at my home over the LAN, I would like to have the ability to transcode.

Then stick with what you've got.

A) You'll spend well north of $350CDN for a vt-d capable cpu/mb/ram that is low power

B) Your current system is likely using very little when idle now. High performance does not mean high power draw 24/7, it just means the chip is capable of that performance / power draw but will idle just as low as a celeron when not stressed.

ok i will just keep it then, its a beast.

One thing though, you might want to tune the overclocking down a notch. Overclocking + 24/7 can end up in tears.

It is not overclocked.

It is not overclocked.

*thumbs up* just thought to let you know since I think majority of Haswell E owners like to overclock.
