July 16, 20169 yr Hi I'm planning my first build. My current system doesn't support (i5-3450) VT-d, so I have a blank canvas as to what CPU and motherboard to buy. I have all my drives apart from a 6TB+ parity drive I'll need to buy and an extra array drive as I'm running out of space. Can I get some advice please particularly on the CPU/Mobo/Ram required to run the following: 1. Definite docker/apss: Plex, Sabnzbd, CP, Sonarr. My Plex collection is mostly 1080p and I want something that can handle 4-5 transcodes simultaneously as I might give some family members access if I have more firepower. At the moment my i5-3450 can handle 3 most of the time depending on how busy the machine is, although I have a suspicion that it can do more and what's holding it back is the fact that when 'taxed' is it is connected to my home network wirelessly (will be fixed when we move soon) and the clients it's playing on are also wireless except 1. I'm also trying to prepare for 4k needs in the future. 2. Possible dockers/apps: Crashplan, ACD/encfs (if I can find a way to implement easily as I'm new to Linux) 3. 3xW10 VMs. I don't play games on my PC and my kids are too young to and only just starting out on PCs, so I don't think I need super-powerful VMs - at the moment what's taxing my current CPU is all the work to keep my Plex setup running in the background. Pretty much everything we do non-Plex is web or Office based. If we need to game in the future (probably buy a console first as easier for the kids), I'll probably buy a mid-powered graphics card 4. 24x7 running new PC will probably be running pretty much 24x7 (plex access), or at least 18 hours a day (off while sleep) At the moment I've specced up an i7-6700k system https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/DZMM/saved/rQ3frH . I've gone for an i7-6700k as even though I don't plan to overclock initially, I don't trust the stock cooler in the i7-6700 so if I buy a cheap (not a monolith) cooler I might as well spend the extra £30 for the i7-6700k and have the option to overclock a bit safely in the future. I haven't put a lot of Ram in as at the moment I run a W8 VM via Hyper-V to do all my downloads behind a VPN and W10 at the same time and I rarely go over 10GB (the W8 VM idles along at around 1.5-2.5GB when there's no downloads running) - my thoughts behind 2x8GB is I can add another 2x8GB if needed in the future. My questions are, (i) do I need an i7-6700k or could I get away with an i5-6600k and overclock it? (ii) should I be thinking of a different chip e.g. an AMD and save money or do I need to spend more and get an i7-5820k? Thanks in advance for any help.
July 16, 20169 yr 4-5 transcodes at the same time is around 10000-12000 passmark points, and the 6700k only has 11000, since you also are planning on running 3 VM's too, I would go with something with a bit more horsepower. Maybe dual E5-2670? They are have 12500 in passmark score each, and only cost 90$ each on ebay. Also, you could consider using delugevpn for downloads instead of a vm. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=46077.0

I had a similar idea last month, but I couldn't find any decent priced motherboards. July 16, 20169 yr Yeah, the motherboards are expensive. This is a good deal, if it has enough pcie slots for you and you can fit it in your case. http://www.natex.us/product-p/s2600cp-cpu-128gb-12800.htm

July 16, 20169 yr Author my original hope was someone would talk me into a cheaper setup, but for an extra £200 I could build this beast: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/DZMM/saved/MZxLrH I'll keep looking for a cheaper mobo as that's what's driving the cost.
July 17, 20169 yr Looks good. When you buy the cpu, just remember that it is some of the cpus does not support vt-d. It is discussed in the thread I linked you. Take a look there before buying

Take a look there before buying I'm working through the thread now and I'm checking out the hardware SIG's in particular as already I've found people using a asrock mobo that's over 100 quid cheaper than my the Asus one - makes this option more palatable as it comes closer to my i7 build in cost (I'll ignore the extra electricity cost!)
