Server grade board and PWM fans?

Featured Replies

A quick question. I don't know if I'm just too used to consumer motherboards. But when I've got 4 pin motherboard connectors for fans, whether I put 4 pin or 3 pin fans, the motherboards I've had have always been able to control the speed of either.

I got a case a few months ago, and all the fans have 3 pin connectors. I tried adjusting them, but it never seemed to do anything in the bios, the fans were always full speed. The connectors are 4 pins on the motherboard.

It's my first server motherboard I've ever purchased, so I'm just wondering if the if this motherboard will only be able to control PWM fans and 3 pins run at full speed... e.g. it's more of a luxury controlling both on a consumer board?

The motherboard I have, if it helps is the: E3C224D4I-14S

That's not a universal trait.  Some 4-pins have to have 4-pain fans to be speed-adjustable, and 3-pin fans will run 100%.  It's that way on my Supermicro X10SRi-F.
