Windows VM via VNC with no internet, possible?

Featured Replies

Good day Crew,

I use Windows 7 for some development work, and have no need for system updates.  I would pass through a single user share called TEMP where I could save/retrieve finished projects.  Currently I must use the VM from a dedicated Ubuntu desktop.

Am I able to create a Windows VM with no hardware passed through and simply use unraid's built in TightVNC viewer on the local network to access the VM on a headless Unraid server without giving the Windows VM Internet access

If so, how?

Thanks

If you set up the VM as normal but don't install the virtio network drivers you would have no internet. Normally share access to a VM is given through the network connection, so that will be a little tricky. I've never tried to get 9p virtio working in windows, I don't know if it's even possible.

Another option would be to install the network drivers, but set a static IP without a gateway inside the VM. That way you could manually specify the IP of your server to get share access without internet.

Oh,  that second option is clever.  Many thanks :)

With KVM is it possible to setup a private network between Guest and Host?  I think you can do that with vmware and hyper-v.  If you could do that, that would be the best solution wouldn't it?

Another good idea.  Will try.  Thanks TSM & Jonathanm both
