Chenbro Cleversafe Slicestor 1440 [eBay]

Would these work well with unRaid? Not sure how old these are and if the backplanes would support larger capacity drives. Looks like only one Raid card so there would have to be expanders to control that many drives.

I have to be honest, I've wondered the same thing. I've thought about with one large chassis and getting rid of the multiple unRAID servers thing I currently have going.

I read somewhere where somebody had bought one of these for around $300 and it was idling at like 80db. That's second and third hand information so take it with a grain of salt.

Now we just need Tom to implement multiple arrays independent of one another in unRAID and we would be set!!

That thing has 4 power supplies with tiny fans, and that is likely where all the noise is coming from. Those small fans have to move fairly quickly to move any decent amount of air.

And if that unit is just to low end for ya, you could always step up to the HGST 60 bay variant:

uhm, one small difference, I really shouldn't even be mentioning it, the slicestor has CPU, memory, NIC, etc, and the HGST has none of these.

I believe the HGST unit needs 220 to work as well as they were imported from Europe. Funny thing is I don't need either as I have a 24 bay SM chassis about half full and a 16 bay SM chassis that is not being used. Just curious to see if other have used this setup and if it's practical for unRaid as others might have a need for it.

Although that's true, the HGST can hold 12 more drives and is new. I was just posting that link for fun. I'm sure someone lit there could make use of these chassis but I'm perfectly rly content with my SM846 chassis for now. I couldn't imagine filling either of these with 8TB drives. Then again back in the day I never thought I would have the amount of storage filled that I have now.

Someone who actually bought, installed, and configured these units.

Older motherboards, support SAS2, loud as hell, cheap caddies.

I bought one of these as well as a 60-bay HGST off ebay a few weeks ago (need to wire some 220V to the rack for the HGST unit though). So far I've got more than half of this Chenbro NR40700 filled, no complaints for my use case. Thing sounds like a vacuum cleaner, but I've got it in a closet in a basement so I do not care.
