October 17, 20169 yr Hey Lime Community! Im looking to transfer my build which currently uses the motherboard ports for the HDDs to a Norco 4224 Case. I am looking for clarification for the "raid/expander" cards. I keep seeing builds where people are using both raid cards and expanders in there builds. why is this required? im looking just to build a unraid setup using the 4224 and my setup. i was looking into Intel RES2SV240NC to take care of all the slots with one card. If i grab the 4224, and the Intel RES2SV240NC am i good to go? Side note: i do have SOME 8TB Shingled drives as well. any concerns with these drives and what was mentioned above? Thanks in advance!
October 17, 20169 yr Author why is that if im not looking to do any sort of raid? any suggestions on what model?
October 17, 20169 yr Because an expander is just that, it expands the number of ports on a SAS controller, so it needs one to work. Recommend a LSI based controller, like the Dell H310, or IBM M1015, both can be found relatively cheap on ebay, they have to be crossflashed to LSI IT mode to work with unRAID.
October 17, 20169 yr Author I have found this diagram, to try and help me grasp this concept, is this what you were going for? what cards do this with the intel i listed above? do any of these do it natively?
October 17, 20169 yr Yes, that's the way it works. The LSI I recommended works for sure, I have one working with the intel expander.
October 17, 20169 yr Author Great, so to confirm. your running Intel RES2SV240NC with a Dell H310, or IBM M1015 (which one are you actually running today?) How difficult is the flash? is it supported, or are you flashing an opensource firmware on it? Are there hardware requirements for this? Thanks! AJ
October 17, 20169 yr I used the Dell H310, but the IBM will work the same since they are crossflashed with the LSI IT firmware, for all purposes they become like a LSI 9211-8i. Flashing instructions and files are on the sticky thread, though we may point you to the actual post for the card you end up getting, as the thread is very long and somewhat confusing: https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12767.0
October 17, 20169 yr Author http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-IT-Mode-LSI-9211-8i-SAS-SATA-8-port-PCI-E-6Gb-Card-Bulk-packing-US-Seller-/291641245650?hash=item43e72c3fd2:g:z2EAAOSwaB5XrrU0 If i go for the card of the firmware your suggesting would that save me the "flashing to IT mode" such as the one above? or is there a reason to go Dell/IBM for the speed? Thanks for your responses today i really appreciate it
October 18, 20169 yr No specific reason but the price. Maybe availability in some regions. The Dell/IBM cards can be had for half. A list of know hardware to work is here. http://www.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility#PCI_SATA_Controllers Information about flashing controllers (wip) http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Crossflashing_Controllers
