CentOS (or similar) Linux dev environment

Featured Replies

I did a bit of searching, but if I missed a previously discussed topic, please let me know.

I'm interested in spinning up a CentOS VM (DVD ISO) on a server with no GPU / i7-6700.  The purpose of this VM is I'd like for it to be my web dev environment.  This would include things like running Sublime text, installing ruby and rails, and using git and heroku to push apps.

The reason I am interested in doing this is because I have a surface pro 4 as well as a desktop pc which are both running windows 10.  The surface pro 4 cannot install linux without some kernel modifications, so I thought it'd be easiest to just create a VM on my unraid box and VNC (from both machines) when I'm looking to code.

Are there any templates or success stories for this kind of scenario?

There is already a template in the VM section in unraid.

Download the cantos iso to unraid and you should be good to go.

I've installed various distros and never really had any problems.

VNC is sometimes a bit laggy and I've found teamviewer a good alternative which I restrict to only the LAN.

I have (at least) two copies of CentOS 7 64-bit running on my server (Cortex).  One is the LAMP server which is mostly a bare-bones system that handles my current websites.  The other is a more full-featured GUI installation with an IDE and rather minimal programming so far.  "Hello World" works, as does the basic Fibonacci programming exercises.  Haven't had much time outside of that.

In case it matters, I selected GNOME for my GUI, and the IDE is called Code::Blocks.  Depending on your needs, there are several others to choose from.
