October 26, 20169 yr I've got a fresh 4TB drive. It's currently plugged in via a SATA-USB3.0 adapter. I've precleared the drive and it's ready to be added to the array. I've got some work I need to do inside the case in the next week or so, but I'm not ready to do it yet (don't have all the parts). Is it reasonable to add the drive to the array while it's attached externally, then, when I have the case open later, move it inside and give it a direct SATA connection? I realize that speed will be a little slower because of the USB connection, but it is a USB 3.0 dock, so it shouldn't be too painful, and it is short-term.
October 27, 20169 yr There is a slim chance that the drive will be seen differently when you move it, and want to be rebuilt. Make sure that the rest of your drives are in good shape just in case.
October 27, 20169 yr Author The primary purpose of this drive at the moment is free space to start reformatting all the others to xfs. My intent is that it will (or at least should) be empty when I relocate it inside the case. It may have to rebuild, but there won't be much to rebuild on to it. Thanks, I appreciate the input.
