MaximumJed
Hi all, I am running Unraid 5.0 rc3 on an HP N40l Microserver. I know it's an older version but I've not had problems for years and haven't seen a need to upgrade in the past. Recently, I noticed some errors on one of the disks in the array (sdb) and a SMART report indicated the drive was approaching end of life, so I replaced it. My intention was to replace with the same size drive, and in the new year, increase the size of the parity drive and update the version of unraid, with a view to increase storage space in future as I am running out. The replacement drive was run though pre-clear once with no issues, and the array was successfully rebuilt. However I checked the server today and have now had some errors occur on the drive and I have the dreaded flashing red ball. I'm not physically near the server, but the connections shouldn't come loose as the drives are all in permanent caddies within the server. I've attached the syslog and smart report for the drive that is red balled, could anyone take a look and let me know if I am looking at a faulty drive that I can try to get replaced, or if I am looking at replacing the server itself. Thanks in advance 2016_12_20_syslog.txt 2016_12_20_sdb_smart.txt Quote Link to comment
trurl
SMART looks OK. Check connections. You can try to rebuild to the same disk. Quote Link to comment
MaximumJed
Thanks trurl, I will look at the server but as I said, not sure what can be the issue for connections. I could temporarily move it to another empty slot using the external SATA cable or in place of the cache drive though. To rebuild just that disk, should I un-assign it, re-run pre-clearing on it, and then re-assign it as though it were an all new drive? Quote Link to comment
trurl
No need to preclear. Stop, unassign, start with disk unassigned, stop, assign, start to rebuild. Quote Link to comment
MaximumJed
Thanks for the advice trurl, I took the drive out and checked over the connections. Then rebuilt the array. It's been successful so far and written with no errors so hopefully it will continue on with no further problems. Quote Link to comment
