Getting ready for server hardware changeover

Featured Replies

Ok so I am getting ready to do my server hardware changeover.

I have tested my new Supermicro chassis, seems to be working fine. I ran memtest up to 20% on the 52GB of ECC RAM that came with the server, no issues and I figure since its ECC it should be ok.

I have documented my drive assignments so I guess all I need to do is:

1. Move my current USB drive to the new server.

2. Move the HBA from my current server to the new server.

3. Move the drives over

4. Power up and make sure everything is ok

My current server has a 16 port Areca RAID controller which is setup in JBOD and I have a SuperMicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 HBA, in the new server there will only be the SuperMicro HBA, that shouldn't cause any problems right? As long as my drive assignments are the same?

Thanks

It should be exactly as you've noted => just move the drives to the new server and boot up with your USB flash drive.

I know, its just never that easy right?  ::):-[:-X:-\;D:D

There is always something......lol

Actually, in my experience it is indeed just that easy ... with one BIG caveat:  If for any reason one (or more) of the drives aren't "seen", then it won't boot correctly.    This could happen if, for example, the new system had an unsupported controller; or you had a loose SATA cable (or power connection).

But the components you've outlined shouldn't have any issues, so as long as everything's connected securely it should indeed be a simple case of turning it on and booting  :) :)
