March 16, 20179 yr Hi everyone, I'm new to the community and so far i'm really digging unRaid. I added a SATA card so I could add some disks that I already had and want to make a config change and need to know how to go about it. Right now this is my setup: Parity: Disk 1 - 3 TB disk Array: Disk 1 - 3 TB disk Disk 2- 2 TB disk Disk 3 - 2 TB disk Cache Disk 1 - 240 GB ssd Disk 2 - 240 GB ssd I now have three more 1 TB drives to add. So, What I want to do it add the 3 drives to the array and remove the existing 3TB drive from the array and convert that to a second parity drive. Whats the best way to go about this? Thanks in advance for the advice!
March 16, 20179 yr Community Expert It is clearer if you number and name the disks the way unRAID does. Parity Parity2 Array disks Disk1 Disk2 Disk3 Cache Cache2 Do you have any data on the 3TB Disk1?

Yes, I have of my data on that since it's Disk1 then unRaid has used it first to store data from my shares. 1 minute ago, trurl said:

March 16, 20179 yr Author I understand I'll need to move the data off. I'm assuming I can just transfer the main directories from /mnt/disk1 to /mnt/disk2 How do I remove the drive from the array and then reset the array so it won't be missed?

Set a new config, assign the remaining drives in the desired slots, and rebuild parity. Just make sure you know which serial number drive goes where, any drive assigned to a parity slot will be irretrievably erased.

So should I just move the data off the drive and then just remove it from the array and start the array back?

March 16, 20179 yr I think what I would do is : - add and format the 1TB drives - copy all of the data on the 3TB drive to any of the other drives you wish - Tools->New Config with Retain nothing - assign the data drives you want, in the order you want, but not the 3TB drive - start the array and check everything, make sure all your data is there on the new array - assign the old parity drive, and assign the 3TB as parity2 - start the array and let parity build Until you start the parity build, the data still on the 3TB will serve as a backup, in case anything goes wrong.

March 16, 20179 yr Just now, RobbM said: Retain nothing? That sounds scary. What does that mean? I don't know if you have tried the Help button, but it's generally pretty helpful. The New Config function has nothing to do with your data, that is completely unchanged. It's only about configuration changes, such as which disks are assigned, and where they are assigned. When you start a fresh array config, you have Retain options, as to which of the assignments you want retained and which you want cleared. Since you are starting a fresh array config, you don't want to retain any of the old config.

Yes, I always read help and Google before posting questions on forums but sometimes geeks can't write very clear help files. I know, i'm a software developer. 9 minutes ago, RobJ said: Since you are starting a fresh array config, you don't want to retain any of the old config. This is what I needed to know. Thanks everyone for the help.
