March 31, 201016 yr I created a share limited 1 drive. On that share is my itunes lib file and all my music. I then mapped that drive. The drive is not asleep but whenever I open iTunes it shows my library then just sits there doing nothing. Its like the application is frozen. Anyone seen this before?
March 31, 201016 yr Isn't that how iTunes normally operates? At least under any Win OS it does. Even when using local drives, iTunes is a performance hog and poorly coded. It's the only application I know that has brought my 3.6Ghz Core 2 QUAD with 8 Gigs memory to it's knees. I no longer use iTunes at all. It's just that horrible.
March 31, 201016 yr Author Well as an iPhone user I don't have much alternative for handing applications and such. That being said. No it did not act this way until I put the share on my Unraid tower.
March 31, 201016 yr do you have any network activity after opening itunes, ie, its actually loading crap. soe programs do not like their files on networked drives.
March 31, 201016 yr Author You know. Right now I'm moving a lot of data to the server. I'm starting to think its only when data is copying that its completely locked up. If I open iTunes when there is NO copy going on (via teracopy) then it pauses for a min and opens fine. If there is ANY sort of copy going on its completely frozen even when the copy finishes no matter how long you wait. UPDATE: I'm wrong it opened fine this time and I had a copy going on. So its seemingly random rather it opens or freezes. Also when copying something into the library it seems insanely slow much slower then copying files to the server.
March 31, 201016 yr I store an itunes library on my server and everything works fine for me. I use a program called multitunes to switch back and forth between my "server library" and my "mobile library." I only put the music on the server and redirect itunes to save anything imported there. iTunes does take longer to launch in this situation (when the music is on the server) because a drive might have to spin up or something to that effect.
March 31, 201016 yr Author iTunes does take longer to launch in this situation (when the music is on the server) because a drive might have to spin up or something to that effect. I understand this. However in my case even if the drive my library is stored on is already spun up it may or may not freeze. Its very strange.
March 31, 201016 yr check yoru event log, see if you are reaching the half open tcp connection limit.
March 31, 201016 yr Author NOthing like that but I did see about 10 errors with Bonjour. Since I don't use Bonjour i went ahead and disabled it. Maybe that will help. edit: its hardly for sure but after doing so I opened and closed iTunes about 5 times without a problem even while a copy was running. its also much more responsive.
April 2, 201016 yr You may also want to try keeping your library file on the local disk and your music on the unRAID server.
April 2, 201016 yr Author You may also want to try keeping your library file on the local disk and your music on the unRAID server. Not really had a problem with that. Actually since I disabled Bonjour I've had no issues at all.
April 30, 201016 yr Author Just a little update. It works but if the array is asleep iTunes will seem to lock up for almost 5 mins before the application is useable.
April 30, 201016 yr Just a little update. It works but if the array is asleep iTunes will seem to lock up for almost 5 mins before the application is useable. That makes complete sense. If the drive is spun down and iTunes tries to access something off of it then that disk will have to spin up. 5 minutes might be a little long for the freeze to happen, but iTunes does not understand what is going on. It probably "freaks out" a little and has a "where the crap is all the music i know should be here" moment. That is the reason i keep my iTunes library on a drive that never spins down.
May 1, 201016 yr Author That is the reason i keep my iTunes library on a drive that never spins down. You can specify one to do that? Because if so thats an awesome solution I'll just toss in a spare 320gb drive and move it there.

Yes, put the drive in your machine and get it all set up to use. Then click on the drive name and set the spin down timer for that specific drive. You can set it to never spin down and use it for your iTunes library.

November 13, 201114 yr Sorry i know this is an old post but i had this issue. I had my iTunes split over multiple disks and the performance was terrible. iTunes would just hang as soon as it started running. The way i got around this is to have iTunes only on one disk and the problem went away. Just a suggestion.
November 15, 201114 yr Yeah iTunes is horribly slow, even when the library is local. Personnally I keep a backup version of my library on unRAID but the library itself is stored locally. I used a network library for some days but it's just not possible, especially when the library is important. What a poor software, considering Foobar2000 is running perfectly fine with folder monitoring and a network library...
