UPS for graceful shutdown

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a UPS purely for graceful shut down, so not need to rebuild parity in event of power failer. I was thinking of this cheap and cheerful apc option, but might not work well with graceful shutdown automation in UnRaid? http://www.ebuyer.com/703990-apc-back-ups-300-watts-500-va-3-x-c13-input-bx500ci

Any thoughts  / guidance on good UPS that works well with UnRaid automation please?

As far as I can see, the linked UPS has no possibility to communicate with the PC/server.
So it can't "tell" the PC to shut down if the mains are out. Not very useful for automation.

APC units work well with unRAID.
Look for a Smart UPS with USB interface.
e.g. APC Smart-UPS C 1000VA LCD

You might want to read around the forum, there are other brands too.

Another thought is that a 300 watt power supply might not be enough to keep your unRAID server running while it shuts down?   What is the rating of the power supply in your server - you normally want a UPS with a similar or higher watt rating.

@itimpi my PSU is 300 watt from memory, I've just put Tower on a plug electric tester and its drawing between 57 to 90 Watts (0.30.0 amps) and cpu was running at 20%, usual idle is 10%.

Btw - I'm running 3 x 3TB WD Reds, 1 x WD Green 3TB, 2 x M.2 500Gb Samsung Evo SSDs, 2 x 8Gb Corsair Ram and an i7 7700 3.6Ghz cpu

Looks like a 600va should be more than enough? I'm thinking this one, any thoughts or guidance? http://www.ebuyer.com/752004-cyberpower-brics-lcd-line-interactive-1000va-600w-avr-ups-br1000elcd-uk

wrong link to ups

Keep in mind, that your tower will power up in an event to prepare for shutdown. Idle specs are not the right assumption.
