May 19, 20179 yr My unRaid boots from a TransMemory 16GB Flash Drive, but I often have to warm reboot the machine and/or unplug and replug the Flash stick for my sever to boot from it, if I don't I get the usual double beep at post, followed by 5 lower tone beeps (presumably means device not recognised) and it doesn't show up as a drive in the BIOS under USB Devices. Are some flash drives more compatible than others, or is my server board (Intel S5500BC) but picky about booting from USB?
May 19, 20179 yr Did you try putting the USB stick into a different USB port? What you are describing is not typical and I'm wondering it the usb port might be broken. If not, and your USB stick is flaking out, you can transfer the unRaid license to a different stick. For the new stick, I'd recommend USB 2 from SanDisk or one of the major players. Not a cheap no name brand. A gig is big enough but i'd recommend 4G. Anything bigger is a waste. I think 32G is the max size. On the Limetech web site there is some info on recommended devices, but may be dated.
May 19, 20179 yr Author I've had similar issues with other server boards, I've tried different USB sockets. The stick was brand new when I purchased the license but I may try another one as you suggest.
May 19, 20179 yr I know some people have reported issues when using usb3 ports for their boot device. I use a Kingston DataTraveler SE9. The SanDisk Cruzer Fit is also very popular.
