UPS require USB cable?

Featured Replies

I just bought an APC UPS to connect my unRAID box to and seem to have it all connected.

I was curious if I had to connect a USB cable from unRAID to the UPS and do I have to configure the UPS Daemon.

I'm hoping that I don't need to do any of that unless I want to setup the 'shut down when 10 minutes of battery is left' type of automation. My house has been having power issues as of late and I just want it to kick in the battery when those 10-60 second power outages hit.

Will my UPS work when that happens (without the USB cable connected and without the Daemon configured)? Or is the entire shabang required?

The UPS will work fine without communicating with unraid. However... if you are not able to shut down the server before the battery runs down, unraid doesn't know it's supposed to shut down and you will be faced with a parity check on startup at the very least, and possible data corruption.

Why do you not want to set it up so unraid can manage a controlled shutdown? BTW, I would never recommend purposely running a UPS below 50% capacity, ideally you should be shutting down with about 75% battery left, so you don't wear out the battery so quickly. UPS batteries last longer if you don't drain them fully, and it takes a significant amount of time to recharge them after an event.

If your events typically don't last more than a minute, then set unraid to shut down after 3 minutes on battery. It will take a few minutes to get everything shut down anyway.

Right, that is what I was hoping for. I realize this and am fine with it.

As mentioned, it's not like my power goes out for extended periods of time. I've just had about 2 dozen 10-60 second outages over the last few months and it's been driving me nuts with the reboots and parity checks.

Reasons why I ask is because. . .

1) It didn't ship with one so I don't have one.

2) The cabling going on here is getting out of hand and needs to be taken care of first

3) I don't mind manually shutting it down for now if I notice it will last a long time

I will definitely be setting it up later, I just wanted to make sure it was good and working with my current setup :)

Thanks for the information
