August 9, 20178 yr Something interesting is happening. I copy a movie or two to my laptop for travel. Often, during the middle of the file copy, Windows will cite a network error and abort the copy ("Retry" is available but doesn't work). I think I've got it pinned down to the disk on the unraid server spinning down during the file copy (its over wifi so large movies take a little while). I like to keep my disks' spin-down time at 15 mins. I know I can set it longer/infinite during a file copy, and then set it back. Still, I'm curious why this happens. Watching a show or movie on Plex, this does not occur. Only during a file copy via SMB. Any ideas?
August 9, 20178 yr Don't have an answer to your question. But wanted to mention that frequent spin up and spin down, more specifically the thermal affect of frequently heating and cooling the drives, is bad for drive health and longevity. I try to avoid having disks spin up and down more than once a day, and find that a 5 hour delay works well for me.
