USB Audio Drops

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm new to Unraid so please excuse my ignorance of the platform.

At my office I'm running the latest unraid server with Windows 10 VM. I do not have a HDMI audio device I can use nor do I have a audio card that is separate from my MB. I'm using a Logitech USB Headset for sound.

The issue I have is that the USB headset will work for a few minutes and then I will get no sound whatsoever. The USB headset appears connected in Windows. I am only able to get sound to return when I disconnect the USB headset in Libvirt Hotplug USB, move the usb plug to another USB port, either on the PC or on a USB hub and reconnect it with Libvirt Hotplug USB. It will play for about 2 minutes then drop the audio again.

I have tried to play with Win 10 USB settings, power management etc. but the issue persists. The issue persists on rebooting Win 10 and the Unraid server.

I have tried to search the forums but I could not find the answer to my issue.

Thank you for your time and guidance.

Sincerely,

Shesh

To clarify, I have other USB devices attached such as a DLink Wifi adapter, which needs to be reconnected about once every day or two. I also have 2 usb drives that are connected that don't have any issues. I have a Cannon Printer and a Dymo label maker that have only had a USB drop twice in several months

Also the headset works fine on my Surface Pro 4

You will probably need to pass through an entire USB controller, so the VM can handle all the USB functions internally. You can't pass through the controller that your unraid boots from, so you will need either a motherboard that has separate USB chips that allow splitting (not very common) or a USB card.

There is a sticky topic in the VM section about this.

passing through a usb controller doesnt seem like a fix to me.  on a single machine with a single VM thats feasible, and probably preferable as then you can unplug and plug at a whim.  but that solution doesnt work well with a multiple VM environment.

i have run into this issue as well except with mine i dont get audio whatsoever.  i have 3 headsets for 3 separate VM's and only one emits sound.  ironically its the cheapest unbranded chinese one that works.  the HP headset and OVleng headset are installed with the microsoft drivers, but silent.  microsoft shows sound being output to it, but nothing.

it might be an issue with the driver itself.  after further digging on my situation, i found that the generic microsoft headset driver may not work correctly.

I have the exact same issue. Except what I tried was:

  1. Using the USB passthrough in Unraid
  2. Passing through PCIe USB (which I bought for this purpose)
  3. Passing through a USB controller on my motherboard

The last one worked for a day or two, but now it disconnects my sound every other minute. With the other two methods I have experienced this problem from the beginning.

EDIT:

I realized I hijacked a thread here, so I made a new post here: https://forums.lime-technology.com/topic/60551-usb-audio-dropping/
