Thoughts on cache pool

Featured Replies

Would like to hear some thoughts on a cache pool, I currently have 3 4TB drives 1 1TB drive and 1 240gig as the cache I'm leaning towards removing the 1TB drive and adding another 240gig ssd as part of the cache I don't think I'll miss 1TB but it sounds like I would gain some security and performance from adding to the cache is this thinking sound? I'm still learning all of this so I have no data to be concerned with yet I figure I would get all the kinks out and get accustom to this before I starting to move files onto the server. Appreciate all the help thats been offered lot of knowledgeable folks on here.

why would you not just add another ssd and keep the data drives as you have them?

I'm at my limit of sata ports and I thought it would help with the data being unprotected in the appdata and cache drive, think I read it right that with a cache pool that would be corrected no?

Yes, the default configuration of the cache pool when you add the second drive is BTRFS RAID1, with redundancy.  How valuable that is depends.  The only thing I have on my cache drive that I'd prefer not to loose is docker data, which I backup to the array with the CABackup component of Community Applications.

You could certainly pull the 1TB drive if you don't need the capacity.  Although, have you considered adding a SATA controller instead?

Yeah I have one actually but this is a pre-built box and not only am I at my limit of sata ports but also room for more hdd's I thought about a new box but because its a pre-built it has a weird config i.e. the mobo is on the opposite side of the case and i'm not sure if it would match up with the i/o shield and the standoffs I figured I would give this a run see how it works for me and in the future purpose build one. I actually have a brand new never used R5 1600x rig I built and haven't even finished overclocking but I just can't see wasting it on this at the moment since 8 to 12 TB is more than enough for my needs at this time, If it takes off as a media server for the house then I will pull the trigger on a new setup.

I'm a fan of small form factor designs but there are compromises involved.  Since that's the case - yes, I'd pull the 1TB drive.  I'd also monitor usage and move to drives larger than 4TB before things get too tight.

Now that I think of it if I put the sata controller in I will have room to make a custom support for small form factor drives i.e. 2.5 ssd's and hdd's the 1TB is 2.5 I thought I read somewhere that unraid was a little sketchy with ssd's in the main array is that not the case? Bear with me I've been reading and watching so many videos and threads trying to learn all this. As far as usage that's just the thing I have no idea where this will go the family is surely interested in plex and the kids like the idea of off console storage of games so if it takes off and that kinda storage is needed I'd be all in on building a purpose built box to fit those needs

Correct it would be protected in that by default a 2 disk cache is raid-1

I'm intrigued as to what motherboard only has 5 SATA ports however

HaHa you'd be even more intrigued it actually only has 3 I have a pcie x1 expansion card that holds 1 2.5 drive (currently a 1TB hdd) and an additional sata port which has my cache drive connected. The system is built on an HP Envy 750-424 it has an i7 6700 16gigs of ddr4 2133 memory it's a very small box but performance wise it seems to be quite a good fit for this, no? I've seen that plex requires 1500-2000 passmark points per stream and the 6700 scores 10000+, more than what I will need any time soon. I was thinking of another expansion card for the for 2-3 more sad's I have a few laying around did read that unpaid is a little wonky with sad's in the main array or was that old news?

Wow ok!

Does the case have room physically for anything else? Pics would be great :)

Sounds quite beefy performance wise

Sure I can do that its funny as it does have a decent cpu ($300) and the ram is up there as well but it is a pre-built ($700) and they do things proprietary to keep you from advancing much further without upgrading to the next higher system they have, will shoot some pics and post shortly, and thanks for the help totally new at this and good resources are hard to come bye.

Yeah, we get that with our Dell Optiplex units at work,
Decent CPU and RAM options, but disks you can squeeze 2-3 2.5" and 1 3.5" in them

My UnRaid does alright with its 2600K powering it along :)

These may shed some light on what I'm dealing with, not sure if you can tell but when I was stripping it down I took the front panel off and low and behold there was an additional 3.5 inch bay hiding behind the cd drive so in theory there are 4 3.5 inch bays and then whatever cards I have installed but as a pre-build it only has 1 x1 and 1 x156 slot so not much headroom for expandability. oh and notice that the board is on the opposite side of the case from the norm!

So if you were to put in a basis SAS HBA, you could hookup all the drives you wanted :)

And if you really want more capacity you could use 4 standoff screws in a HDD and mount it at the bottom too.

2.5" ssd's love being put just about anywhere too, plenty of spots hide them away :)

SSDs are not officially supported in the array.  Some people are experimenting with it, though.

He's using them as Cache. Like what a high volume of users here do already
