changing from Pata to Sata drives

Featured Replies

My old machine had one IDE port that I used to run 2 hard drives IDE 0 and IDE 1 now I am upgrading to a bigger case with a new motherboard that is all Sata. I had 1 parity drive on the old board and 6 data drives trying to add all the drives to the new board and add 2 new Sata drives to replace the 2 Pata drives is giving and error of "Too many wrong and/or missing disk!"

I have Pata to Sata converters on the way but there still 3 weeks out is there any way to get around this error and get my box up and running now?

Assuming that you were only running a single parity drive, then there is no way around that.

yes only one parity drive

would it work if I put it all back in my old machine and got rid of the 2 Pata drives by unassigning them there then move the disk over to the new box with out the Pata drives

You won't be able to rebuild.

What you'd have to do is on the old machine, put the ide drives in and the 2 replacement drives, do a new config, and copy all the files onto the new drives.

Once that's done, you'd put them into the new machine, do a new config, assign all the drives appropriately and then build parity.

does it matter if the 2 Pata drives where empty there where the last 2 disk in the array so they had nothing on them yet.

Or copy all my movies off to external hard drives and install every thing new then copy movies back over

If there are no files on the PATA drives that you want to keep, then you can just New Config on the new system without them and rebuild parity.

I used New Config All and  just got rid of the Pata drives. re built the parity and all seems to be back in place and running smooth now

Thanks for help everyone.

I need help with a problem after installing all the drives in to my new case and using the 2 PATA drives with Pata 2 Sata converters. After it was running and every thing seemed fine I logged in to the machine GUI and the error column was red top to bottom with unreadable disk errors I turned the Machine off and relocated it to my work bench. after powering it up and looking back at the Main page all the Error are now gone.

I also tried to make SHARES by clicking on the Make New Share and a msg box came up saying your new share has been "deleted" I tried 3 different names but all 3 where deleted.

Also the shares where showing up as hard drives after 2 reboots I got the share names back

When clicking on a share name it takes you to share settings under Included Disk it shows drives 1 - 6 when I have 9 data drives is there a max of 6 drives you can see or some thing when I click on calculate All for the size used I get an error on a couple for using Drive 7 that is out of range how can I add drive 7,8 and 9 to the shares for data storage?

When I moved my drives to the new case I loaded it up with 9 Data drives and one Parity drive Parity is 4TB and plugged in the key drive from my old machine in to this new one and it booted up fine I thought I would have to at least install a new copy of unraid 6.3.5. I thought the key was tied to your machine and if you changed mother boards or cpu or some thing you had to get a new key or was I miss informed on that?

Check Global Share Settings

  • Author

@trurl

I found the rest of my drives under Global but after adding drives 7, 8 and 9 to Global share I still get the error "Share is outside the list of designated drives"

@trurl

I got it fixed I had to go back and add Disk7 back to the ones with the error

Note it shouldn't actually be necessary to specify any drives in Global Share Settings. Like with User shares, Include means ONLY and Exclude means EXCEPT. If you don't Exclude any drives, and you don't Include any specific drives, then all are included.
