(solved) newbie install question about appdata

Featured Replies

Hi, first time user of unraid. I have the OS installed and have the server going With this setup: 1 parity hd, 3 data hd and one ssd cache drive.

I have enabled docker as im trying to use that for my apps on the server. But what are the best location for appdata when using Dockers? it seems the appdata is placed at disk1 by default.

but i think i have read that appdata should be on cache drive?

If so. how do i change the settings/move appdata (who is currently empty as server is been up for 30 min)?

Best regards

You're correct

Stop the docker service via Setting Tab

Shares Tab, Set the appdata share to be use cache:Prefer

Main Tab, Array Operations, Run Mover

Also verify under the docker Tab (advanced view) that the default location for appdata is set to /mnt/user/appdata (or ideally, /mnt/cache/appdata) and not to /mnt/disk1/appdata

thanks for the fast reply, donated some to you. im sure ill have to ask more later :-)

It seems to have been changed to  /mnt/user/appdata so thats ok, or should i change it to cache/appdata? its the same area the docker apps will use as data area, like downloads?

Thanks for the beer...  Breakfast of Champions!

Assuming that any downloads of media / whatnot will also use the cache drive (recommended), if its a really small ssd cache, you're best off with /mnt/user/appdata.  If its a decent size (>200Gig), then you're better off and will have less problems with various apps as /mnt/cache/appdata

only 120 gb ssd disk, so im going With /mnt/user/appdata for now and then buy a New larger cache then. or i have a spare ssd 120 gb to add as second cache will that help?

Nah, leave it as /mnt/cache

You'll set your share for downloads to be use cache:prefer

Using cache prefer (and setting the location to be /mnt/user) allows unRaid to "overflow" the files onto the array if the cache drive fills up.  Problem is that some applications do not like having their appdata reference as being /mnt/user and only work 100% properly as /mnt/cache.

I keep flipflopping on my recommendation for appdata being /mnt/user vs /mnt/cache as:  I have never had any problem with /mnt/user but some users do, and no one has thus far ever been able to explain why such and such app has a problem with it (when it works perfectly for me)

Default set up for a cache pool is RAID1 (mirroring), so you won't gain any space.  Via the command line you can set it to RAID0 which will give you the extra space.
