GUI unresponsive, console slow, need assistance for a clean powerdown/reboot

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I came home to an unresponsive GUI (whether through remote laptop or screen attached to unraid server). I think it may be related to a Plex docker that has gone rogue, judging by the logs.

On the unraid server the Firefox browser will not load and the mouse movement on screen is painfully slow.

Now I have little to no console experience, but recognised that was going to be the only way to recover the situation! I understand that I need to share a diagnostic zip file to get some relevant support, I need some assistance in retrieving the file. Here's what I've done thus far;

1) used "docker ps" to see a list of dockers and stop plex.

2) I used the "diagnostics" command and after quite some time a file has been generated in the /boot/logs/ folder.

3) tried the "poweroff" command, although even though it gave a msg in the logs saying "The system is going down for system halt NOW!" it doesn't seem to do anything.

My question is, how do I retrieve this file using the console to my laptop, as i can't just pull the USB flash drive from the server and can't seem to power it down (although doubt I'm doing that correctly!).

Appreciate any help! :)

Try a quick push (~ 1 second) of the power button on the server case.  (Holding down on the power button (> 5 seconds ) will force a unclean shutdown and can be used in an emergency.  It sounds like you might have some Docker/plugin/VM that is has a file open on the array which is preventing the array from stopping.)

Managed to connect to share folders using finder and retrieve the diagnostics zip file (the connection was repeatedly failing, not sure why it let me through all of a sudden)

File attached.

Thanks for the tip on hitting the power button, I'll hold off on that until you / others have had a chance to look at the diagnostic file in case there is something pertinent in there.

Syslog is filled with page stalls, some over a minute, this usually helps, but you need to reboot first:

Ok, how would you recommend I reboot though, considering poweroff/powderdown doesn't seem to be working.

Should I hit the powerbutton briefly as frank1940 suggested?

If nothing else works...

Thanks both. The poweroff command worked after 40min of being left to run!

I have rebooted, installed Tips and Tweaks and set the properties mentioned to 1 and 2%.

Have also installed Fix Common Problems.

Be keen to hear if you have any other recommendations that would stop this from happening again!
