mksabir
Hi, i am planning to purchase a new HP micro server gen 10 x3216. Please can you advise if this will be good for my needs? Im planning on configuring as Nas with all my movies in high quality 1080p with dtshdma. Will only be accessed over internal network at home using plex. Due to all the transcoding that will be happening, is the cpu powerful enough? Thanks in advance for any replies. Quote Link to comment
ashman70
Instead of Plex why don't you use Kodi, this way there is no transcoding and the files are just played as they are, this is what I do. Something like an Nvidia Shield can run Kodi and supports all the audio features you want. Quote Link to comment
mksabir
Thanks for quick response. I will give it a go. Havnt bought the hardware yet. I have amazon fire tv with kodi already installed. Quote Link to comment
ashman70
So that is simple then, copy your media to the HP Micros server, create a share, add it to Kodi and done. Quote Link to comment
mksabir
Do i still need urRaid? Quote Link to comment
mksabir
Im just looking for a simple nas solution Quote Link to comment
ashman70
unRAID is about as simple as it gets for a NAS solution. It has many advantages such as being able to use mixed drive sizes and growing the array by adding drives as you need to. I used to use name brand NAS's from QNap and Synology and switch over to using unRAID as I found it more flexible and affordable. Quote Link to comment
tdallen
I'm not an HP Microserver expert, but I think we're talking about an AMD Opteron x3216 APU with 2,313 Passmarks. That's a pretty low end chip. It could run unRAID as a basic NAS but would not be capable of much transcoding - so you want to be sure your Kodi plan will work before purchasing it. mksabir
Ive since seen a gen 8 with a xeon processor with around 6000 passmark. But im looking at 80w tdp. So im sure this will be perfect for any transcoding. But is more power hungry. Whereas x3216 is only 20w tdp Quote Link to comment
tdallen
An older Gen8 with a Xeon would give you a lot more flexibility. With the Gen10, even the x3421 only has 5,012 Passmarks. For a platform that previously supported Xeons, I'm not sure where they're going - but again, I don't really follow the Microserver line. Quote Link to comment
mksabir
This is what im looking at. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F192362190909 Quote Link to comment

mksabir
With an unraid system, is it true that the hardware shuts down when not in use/streaming? I dont want the disks, cpu and fans powered on 24/7. Quote Link to comment
ashman70
You can configure the hard drives to spin down after a period of inactivity yes, however if you are going to use this to play media, you have to expect a delay as the disks spin up when you go to play something. Quote Link to comment
mksabir
Thanks for confirming. Definitely excited about this and looking forward to it. Still shopping around for hardware. ? Quote Link to comment
mksabir
If I get gen 8 microserver, can I connect IP cameras direct to this micro server by using a poe network switch on one of the gbit ports of server and also use as a media NAS device connected to other gbit port on server using unraid? ashman70
You would connect the Micro server to either the same switch or another switch connected to the PoE switch. Quote Link to comment
