UnRAID 6.3.5 can't boot (looping)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am setting up my first UnRAID server and I am having a problem. The system does not boot to any of the UnRAID options from the menu (Normal, GUI or Safe Mode) MemTest goes fine. I have recorded what happens when I try to boot in to the OS.

LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjHCKJB-ts4&feature=youtu.be       (might want to put the video in slow mode, because it happens fast).

I have tried with a few different USB flash drives, and creating from both the USB creator tool and manually. Tried from all my USB port on the MB (2.0 and3.0)

Hardware is:

CPU: Intel 2600k @ 3.4GHz

MB: ASUS P8H61-M Pro Rev 3.0 - BIOS v: 4802

RAM: 8GB of Kingston @ 1333MHz

Hope someone can give me any pointers to what the problem might be.

Thanks in advanced for any advice, it is most appreciated.

Added Notes:

- I have tried it on one of my old laptops where it started just fine.

- System does turn of after rebooting for about 30 min, but then starts the loop again if I manually reboot or shutdown the system.

I looked at your video and the boot process has started.  Is it hanging at this point?  Or doing something else?  (The process that starts at that point does take some period of time to finish.)  Is this a new built?  Which version are you using?

Suggested run time for memtst is twenty-four hours.

Could you write (or expand) this in a different way?   I really don't understand what is happening.  Are you saying (1) it boots up to a login prompt and then spontaneously reboots after 30 minutes or (2) after hanging at this point (as shown in  the video), it spontaneously reboots after 30 minutes  or (3) something entirely different.

System is running 6.3.5, running on an older system I had laying around. Had windows install on it until recent (windows disk not in use).

Sorry for bad explaining. What happens is what's shown in the video and it will keep on rebooting (over and over again) for about 25-30 min before finally booting just fine. And if I manually reboot or shutdown the server it will then start with rebooting (loop) for about 25-30min before turning on again. Hope the problem was better explained this time.

Once the system is on it seems fine. Been using it for the past hour or so. Problem is only when it first starts up.

Will try and run a longer memtest if needed. First test I did was running for about 2 hours with no errors.

Thanks for help

Sounds more like a compatibly issue, you could try v6.4 which uses a much newer kernel, but more importantly a different one.

Will try that, thanks

Just tried 6.4.0_rc17b and it still does the same... So I am now gonna run a 24 hour memtest, as it must be something HW related.

If it's the same with v6.4 it probably is.

Day 2: Memtest has run for 18 hours with 0 errors. maybe it's not my RAM but the MB that is being difficult. Don't know if anyone here have had a MB problem with UnRAID?

Let that test finish its run to 24 hours...

Hardware problems are not unusual.  They do happen and the intermittent ones are the most difficult to find.  I would not start with the MB.  I would probably start with the Power Supply.  Good PS are not that expensive and a lot of folks have one suitable for a quick test on the shelf.  If you don't, you could check with tech-savvy friends.  (It is recommended for unRAID that the PS have a single 12V rail with at least 2 amperes of capacity per hard drive as there are times when all of the hard drives are spun up at once.)

That MB may be a bit long in the tooth (as I saw some manuals with dates in 2011 period) so you might have a careful look at it make sure that none of the capacitors have bulging tops.

You might absolutely certain that the leads from the case reboot button to the MB have not been pinched.  (Or just disconnect it at the MB for a test.)

I switched out the PSU with a different one I had laying as I did not trust it. Started with a OCZ 750W but now using Corsair RM850X.  System only has 3 drives connected right now (2 HDD + 1 SSD) So power draw should be fine right now.

My can't see any issues visually on the MB. Will have a look in my storage to see if I have any DDR3 sticks laying around and test with those.

My system is not it a case right now, running on a test bench (I always test my systems before installing them in the case)

Will post back later if memtest finds anything or if changing RAM fixes the problem.

Thank for all the help so far.

Memtest finished with no errors after 24hours.

But I just found out that it is the MB that's the problem, had another LGA1155 board laying in storage (only problem with that board is that it has only 2 working SATA ports). Seems like that one worked just fine. So I think I will retire these boards and try again later with newer hardware or server hardware if I can get my hands on some.

Just gonna say thank for all the help I have gotten, will definitely return if I have problems in the future (hopefully with a better ending).

Hope everyone has a great end of 2017 with friends, family and servers :)
