May 22, 201016 yr I read somewhere on the forum that if a share has too many folders it can bog things down. I don't know if this is with or without the directory cache script in place. So is there a maximum number of folders that you shouldn't go over in order to avoid performance problems when viewing/streaming content over NFS? 200? 500? Please keep in mind that I'm only referring to a directory of several hundred folders, and not files. I ask because I don't know whether I should have one share that lists everything, or split it into about 5-7 alphabetical range shares, such as: Share 1: A-C folders Share 2: D-H folders Share 3: I-M folders Share 4: N-R folders Share 5: S-W folders Share 6: X-Z folders Thanks
May 22, 201016 yr This is not a response to your question, but maybe you'll find it relevant anyway. I've found that ordering things into Kids, Drama, ActionThriller, Comedy, Series, etc. makes it easier to choose on any given night.

Can you elaborate please? What exactly is NFS in this context - HTPC software? I use XBMC regularly and see no performance issues whatsoever. This with 1K movies, a zillion TV shows, and more MP3 than I could listen to in a month or more. Are we talking apples and oranges here - how have you set things up exactly and what's this NFS if not a sharing protocol?

You can use NFS with XBMC. NFS is a network protocol and XBMC is a media center platform, two different things. I personally use samba with no performance degradation to stream 1200+ movies and over 2TBs of TV Shows (also, each movie is in its own folder). Most of that is a mix of 720p and 1080p content and I can stream simultaneous streams to multiple xbmc boxes. With XBMC library you don't have to sort stuff on your server, XBMC offers the flexibility to sort your library however you want.
